Enneagram 101
The Enneagram is one of the world's most powerful tools for self-understanding — not because it labels you, but because it reveals why you do what you do. It maps nine distinct patterns of how we think, feel, and behave, each rooted in a deeply held belief about what we need to be safe, loved, and whole.
Most personality systems describe what you do. The Enneagram asks why — revealing the core motivations, fears, and longings that quietly drive your choices, relationships, and reactions.
Your type is not a ceiling — it's a starting point. Understanding your type gives you a clear map: where your growth edges are, what freedom looks like for you, and the path from survival patterns to your truest self.
The Enneagram doesn't just name the pattern — it interrupts it. When you can see your type's automatic responses clearly, you gain the one thing that changes everything: choice. That space between stimulus and response is where transformation lives.
“This tool can name what is both broken and beautiful in you. And although it can be uncomfortable to receive, that knowledge brings you a powerful gift—the ability to choose differently. But I have found and believe that true inside-out transformation is possible when we hold that insight with open hands and bring it to Jesus—who took on all our sins and conquered the grave, offering each of us freedom from the unhealthy patterns and false stories that entangle us—so we can live life anew.” — Trish Frazier · Magnifico Wellness
Each type develops a strategy in early life to get their core need met — to feel safe, loved, or valued. That strategy becomes automatic. Over time it stops serving you, yet you keep running it because it's all you know. The Enneagram names the strategy, traces it to its root, and shows you what integration — the journey toward your healthiest self — actually looks like.
The nine types are grouped into three Triads — each centered in a different intelligence: body, heart, or head. Understanding your center helps you recognize which kind of awareness you naturally lead with, and which you tend to avoid.
Anger / Gut Instinct
Types 8, 9, and 1 operate primarily from the gut — instinct, action, and anger. While their anger is expressed differently (8 externalizes it, 9 numbs to it, 1 represses it as resentment), all three need to find a healthy relationship with anger as information. Their gift is presence, groundedness, and the capacity for right action.
Shame / Feeling
Types 2, 3, and 4 operate primarily from the heart — emotion, image, and identity. Shame is the underlying driver (2 hides shame through helping, 3 through achievement, 4 through uniqueness). Their gift is emotional intelligence, empathy, and deep relational capacity.
Fear / Thinking
Types 5, 6, and 7 operate primarily from the head — analysis, strategy, and planning. Fear drives each differently (5 withdraws, 6 seeks security, 7 escapes into future plans). Their gift is intellectual brilliance, strategic thinking, and visionary possibility.
Each type carries a core passion (the habitual pattern) and a virtue (the path home). The core longing is the message every type most needs to hear and believe.
